I've been somewhat uninspired recently when it comes to the blog, but if there is one thing I can't resist it's glitter, jewels, and a great party dress.

Love Olivia Wilde in Marchesa and Louboutin booties, and how Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland accessorized her Max Azria Atelier gown with one of a kind Mikimoto diamond and pearl necklace.

While perusing pics from last night's Golden Globe awards I noticed a number of standout trends amongst the gowns: pink, green, and longggg sleeves.

Claire Danes in Calvin Klein Collection, Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta, Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang.

Catherine Zeta-Jones in Monique Lhuillier, Angelina Jolie in Versace, Elisabeth Moss in Donna Karan.

Ann Hathaway in Armani Privé, Leighton Meester (looking very Country Strong) in Burburry Prorsum.

My favorite look of the evening? Olivia Wildes' Marchesa ball gown. Gah! Glorious! I would die to just try that on, I can't imagine.

Some other looks I wanted to share come from Harper's Bazaar 2011 award show gown predictions - runway looks they'd like to see on the red carpet... I concur!

Jewelry Spotlight - SEMI

On December 12th Brooklyn based artist Ren Ariel Sano unveiled a vibrant collection of handcrafted statement jewelry – SEMI by Ren Ariel Sano – online at www.semijewels.com.

The eclectic collection is comprised of necklaces, bracelets, and drape rings, all handmade using various chain (including antique copper, gunmetal, and silver), cotton thread, and glass beads.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Ren for many years, and have had the opportunity to experience her work up close. The exquisite quality of each piece is remarkable, as is the meticulous attention to detail clearly given to every aspect of the design.

Ren is an artist of many mediums – she is an amazing painter and sculptor, which seems to inform this vivid collection. When I first came across SEMI I was absolutely impressed, but not at all surprised; I had always admired Ren’s personal style, especially her easy ability to accessorize. I asked Ren what influenced the design of this collection:

I have always been inspired by European gypsy culture of the 17th century and kitschy west coast Americana, so I tried to combine elements of both. I want my jewelry to be easy and comfortable but bright and interesting enough to draw a lot of attention… I like accessories that are really low maintenance.

Holiday Gift Guide - For Your Girl

This gift guide is a little different as it's geared toward the boy (or girl who loves girls) who needs ideas for his girlfriend. Now I don't believe that many boys read this blog, but I do believe that many are very bad at picking out gifts and could use some guidance - just slip him the link (wink wink). My personal taste in gifts from a boyfriend is romantic, personal, definitely not practical (i.e. my parents have been informed that I would like black print cartridges, a car charger, and a replacement beater for my hand mixer - I do NOT want my boyfriend to give me any of these things).

The Details... a silk robe/dressing gown is a great choice, it's special, you don't need to worry about fit like you would with most clothes or lingerie and she can wear it daily if she wants to. English Rose Robe. I've said before that
perfume is not a good choice as peoples taste in it varies greatly and if you get her something she doesn't like she won't want to wear it, but will feel bad for not wearing her gift etc., but if you get her what you know to be her personal favorite it works, and she can think about you every time she sprays it. My all time fave, Chanel CoCo Mademoiselle. Something cozy and warm is always welcome in the wintertime - Bop Basics Faux Fur Stole and this amazing Milly Belle du Jour Beaded Sweater.

I'm a traditional girl and love getting jewelry from my sweetie, every time you put it on you can think about him and the day you got it, blah blah blah, I am very sentimental. I think a ring and a watch are great choices as they are both items you can wear everyday. A ring obviously carries more romantic weight, and it doesn't need to be an engagement ring to act as a signifier/reminder of your love and togetherness. I love a ginormous cocktail ring as a gift, but in this situation I like the idea of something a little more romantic and simple, that you could where everyday if you choose. Love me Tender Ring, Held Dear Ring, MXMJ Love Bug and Snow Bunting Rings. You may remember I recommended Michael Kors watches for the boyfriend, well, I love them! and am recommending them for the girlfriend as well...matching watches? Michael Kors Oversized Watch and 'Blair' Chronograph Watch.

A gift certificate for a massage or spa services is a great way to give her something that will make her feel special and good about herself. Have her make a day of it, then pick her up to go out for a nice dinner. In SF I love Kabuki Springs & Spa. A surprise vacation, plane tickets, or a weekend out of town is an excellent gift you get to enjoy together. Make as many of the travel plans ahead of time so all she has to do is show up, and have something tangible to show her, a reservation confirmation or something of the sort to show this is not some vague promise for the future but something that is actually going to happen in the near future. In my more affluent dreams I'd choose someplace tropical, like the DR. Finally, a 'Story of Us' style photobook. I am the queen of photobooks. Fill one up with memories from all stages of your relationship, the past year, or a really great vacation you recently took together. They are wonderful keepsakes and take a lot of thought, time and effort which she will recognize and appreciate. You can make one at pretty much any photo site, 'Blurb' has some really beautiful options.

p.s. If you need additional gifting advice, ask her bff! Seriously, your girl and her friend will both find it so sweet that you did and you'll most likely turn out with something that she loves... I've already informed my bf that if in the future it is engagement ring time he is to turn to a particular friend, who knows my taste perfectly, for advice, same goes for any gift... it just makes sense. xo.

Holiday Gift Guide - Hostess, Co-Worker, Teacher

Today's guide offers ideas for the hostess, co-worker, and teacher. Your relationship with any of these people can vary greatly - this may be someone you are incredibly close with, or someone you don't know at all on a personal level, so this affects your choice in gift and what is or is not appropriate - I believe this guide reflects that variance well:

The Details... a gift for the home is always a good way to go when shopping for a hostess gift. I worked in gourment/specialty food for a long time and became quite adept at putting together food related gift baskets.
A combination of olive oils, salts, aged balsamics, honeys, chocolates, cheeses etc. is a really nice and useful gift; I like to group an assortment of items by locale, such as artisanal cheese, honey and flatbread from Marin County, CA, or salt, butter, and caramels from Brittany, France. I like this California flavored dipping oil and dish duo - Olivier Gift Crate. Gifts for the kitchen are especially appropriate for the hostess. Pretty linens and table accouterments, like these beautiful, gold Chilewich Dahlia Placemats or one of the adorable aprons from Anthropologie (I have two, they are awesome) are really thoughtful gifts - a couple years ago I had a Christmas soiree and one of my girlfriends brought me a set of really pretty, stylish cloth napkins - this gift was especially fitting as I just recently moved into the apartment where the party was held and it was my first time living with my boyfriend. I was in hyper-nesting mode, making a present like napkins seem immensely special. An ornament! Provided you know your gift-ee celebrates Christmas an has a tree an ornament is a great gift, especially if you are attending a a party and just want to bring something small for the hostess. She can enjoy it right away and for years to come; Savannah Story Ornament, Rhino.

Scented gifts, like these diffusing rods and trio of Tocca perfumes are not necessarily the best choice for someone you don't know at all as some people are very sensitive or particular about scents but are still lovely gifts, and if you are unsure about someones preference just include a gift receipt or make sure to shop somewhere, like Sephora, you know makes easy returns. I love these lacy earrings and this datebook is a great choice for a co-worker or a teacher - again may be best to include a gift receipt - some people are very particular about their planners (me)! I am in love with this MXMJ umbrella, and I think it makes a particularly nice gift because it is not the sort of thing a lot of people would spend much money on themselves (I wouldn't) but would still really love to have (I would!). Marc by Marc Jacobs Jumbled Birds Umbrella. When I first came across this mug while researching (i.e. pretend online shopping) for this post I thought it was the absolute perfect gift for a teacher or a co-worker. It's pretty, personal, and functional - something they can keep on their desk at work for coffee breaks or to hold pens etc., and affordable (only $6). Mongrammed Mug, Missus. These little charm necklaces are so cute on their own, and if you want to bulk up the gift a bit the envelope is made to fit a gift card. Gift Card and Charm Necklace, a great way to personalize a somewhat impersonal gift card.

While putting together this guide I was imaging shopping for tween/teen girl cousins. As the oldest cousin on both sides of my family I have a lot of practice shopping for this demog, and I think it is my favorite - of course I am blessed with awesome girl cousins, and I pretty much just choose whatever I would have loved at that age (or even what I would love now). There is an emphasis on the trendy, funky, girly accessory, and also, compared to other guides, an emphasis on small designer items (i.e. MXMJ cellphone case and Juicy Couture hair-ties) because though I don't care so much about the label now, I can recall how special it felt at that age to own something obviously designer. Retailers I would recommend include Nordstoms BP (juniors), Sephora, Victoria's Secret Pink and Urban Outfitters.

The Details... the super cozy Frenchi Marled Infiniti Scarf. 'Lola' by Marc Jacobs is my scent du jour and I love this big baubly solid scent ring. Normally I wouldn't recommend perfume as a gift (unless you already know
your gift-ee's scent) as everyone's taste in it varies so widely, but Sephora's generous return policy makes for a safe bet. The Big-Ass Book of Crafts is full of fun activities, great for winter break. Sephora by OPI mini collection, great holiday party colors. Pewter Art Deco Style Beaded Box Bag, last year all my teen-girl cousins got NYE party themed gifts, a glam clutch with coordinating jewelry and accessories inside, that they could potentially wear on New Years; I'm a sucker for a themed gift, and found it quite brilliant. The Fireside Long Jane Pajama, perfect for Christmas morning. Rihanna's latest 'Loud' is a fun dance record, it's been playing in my car all week. Marc by Marc Jacobs has a collection of fun, colorful, inexpensive, tech accessories, like this iphone case. Juicy Couture Charms elastic hair bands - kinda silly, yes, but I know I would have loved to get them in high school.

huge selection of relatively affordable cashmere products. Nordstrom 'Eyelash' Colorblock Cashmere Wrap. 'Keep Calm Carry On' mug reminds me of my mama. Mariage Freres teas are absolutely delicious. Definitely pricey, but that's what makes them gift-worthy. I had the opportunity to try many of them when I worked at a local gourmet food retailer, and the Marco Polo, Eros, and Moroccan Mint strains are my favorite. I love this Rebecca Minkoff 'Bookworm' Kindle cover, and these stylish Paper Source folded notes, Batik Mum on Red Lokta A2 Stationary. A puzzle, seems kind of nerdy, I know - but it's a great ongoing activity to have out during the holidays when lots of family is around, and these wooden ones from Anthropology are really works of art. Holiday Gift Guide - for the Boys

It's Pour L'amour's first holiday season! and I am super excited to debut the first of a week-long series of holiday gift guides, full of ideas for all of those on your gift-giving list.

I am one of those who goes craazy for Christmas, and I especially love picking out and putting together perfect gifts for my loved ones. In my family, as the resident shopping-lover, I tend to do the bulk of it (no complaints here), I've also done my share of personal shopping (buying gifts on anothers' behalf), and worked for years in retail (I'm also a gift-wrap expert, haha), leaving me pretty good at picking out gifts for all sort of people. Details... I've found an excellent way to get your guy to dress the way you like is to buy him clothes! apparently I like a little prep? Banana Republic sweaters. BR, GAP and Old Navy always have excellent deals at the holidays.
A watch is a great gift for someone special. I love Michael Kors mens timepieces; a couple years ago I chose one similar to this as the first major gift I ever got my bf, I still really love it and ~~steal~~ borrow it all the time. Michael Kors stainless steel chronograph watch. A lot of the guys I know are for the first time living on their own or with a partner, away from a roommate situation into a more grown-up space - gifts for the home are a great choice in this case. The Breville Panini press has garnered great reviews. The DuraClear Margarita glass set is shatter-resistant, dishwasher safe and great for outdoor entertaining. Album covers make for great and personal wall art. These inexpensive frames up their sophistication significantly - LP Album frame. For the boy who likes hip-hop and reading... Decoded, by Jay-Z. I've actually heard this is quite good (Yes, Oprah approves) and would like to read it myself. Boys wear belts out! a new one is always appreciated. BR Versatile harness belt. Cozy slippers are always welcome in the wintertime. And no matter how much we kinda hate them - let's admit it, we all love our UGGs. UGG 'Ascot' slipper, and BR 'Santa Girl' Boxers.

Fall Find

Fall Find! yes, I do plan on extending this "fall" alliteration trend (Autumn Alliteration!) as long as possible (hopefully you caught my previous post: Feelin' Fall)... ANYWAY: Recently, while indulging my online "window shopping" addiction I stumbled across a fairly new (2006), and local (to the SF Bay Area - Emeryville, CA) online boutique: Nasty Gal, which stocks new and vintage styles. I've never ordered from them at this point, but I'm definitely a fan of the website, I certainly recommend it as a source for styling inspiration.

Of course any advocate of short skirts and knee-highs is a friend of mine... just not a look I ever get sick of. Speaking of short skirts, how old is too old to pull one off?

A very yucky birthday is fast approaching (I've never been so old!) and it's had me wondering about dressing one's age, and when that becomes something one has to consider. No, I am not an obese grandmother of ten running around in mini-rompers and knee-highs, but still, at what point should this sort of thing become a concern??
Tell me honestly, darling readers, I need your input!

Feelin' Fall

Fall has always been my favorite season to dress for. Summer is lovely, and I definitely enjoyed this past one which seemed uncharacteristically warm, and supplied weeks of sundress/swimsuit opportunities. Still I always get a little excited when the air shifts to brisk, and suddenly the sky takes on all sorts of dark, wondrous, periwinkle shades of gray. Last weekend I woke almost giddy, kid-on-Christmas-morning-style, to the sounds of the first rain of the season.

The past week has been all about tights, wool coats, and breaking out the boots. Though my collection is far from lacking, I've decided a new pair of flat to low-heeled brown knee highs is in order this season. A comfortable pair of knee high boots is a worthy investment and an all weather wardrobe staple; perfect with a mini or over slim fitting jeans, and the ones I've now worn to the ground were absolutely indispensable on my last two winter visits to New York City, they weathered the weather (I=witty), and were comfortable enough for days upon full days walking the city.

A few I'm considering (all around $150):

Seychelles, Ciao Bella, Hive and Honey, Corso Como

Maybe not the most fashion-forward item in my arsenal, but necessary nonetheless. Who says I don't own practical footwear!

The Chanel Suit

My previous post, Holy Chanel!, covered the Chanel RTW show at Paris Fashion Week. I noted the classic tweed suit, a staple of the brand reinvented year after year since it's birth, over 90 years ago!

What defines the iconic suit?

...the classic Chanel suit has "boxy" lines. The typical suit also has braided trim and a slim skirt lined with a gold link chain. The buttons either resemble coins or are gold with the double "cc" logo displayed amid them. There is always a ribbon sewed in the waist of the skirt to prevent the blouse from slipping and the zipper is placed on the side of the skirt to enable comfort. In a sense, wearing a Chanel suit is like wearing a customized ornate costume, made to fit so that when the wearer moves, the suit still maintains perfect grace and elegance*

Craazy Coco! in the 60's a thousand years old still doing her thing

Even after being modernized year after year, the look has remained true

to it's original concept even after Chanels death and the transition to Karl Lagerfeld as head designer and creative director. For forty years Lagerfeld has honored design and kept it relevant season after season. I find this incredibly impressive and important.

Holy Chanel!

From the EPIC Chanel RTW show last week in Paris:

oh my...

Though for the most part the looks from this RTW collection are farrrrr from ready-to-wear (in my opinion) the overall show was nothing short of stunning.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to experience it in person... I know I've said it before but I honestly believe I would have cried! I imagine that seeing something like that pink floof above walking down the runway would be, literally, breathtaking.

...and I die!

Kraaazy Karl!

What an amazing venue.

On the first day of French class, back in middle school, we all got to choose French names and I chose "Chantal", for no other reason than it resembled "Chanel". At this point I was not remotely familiar with anything the fashion house actually produced, but I knew it was something special, special enough to name oneself after!

(side note: my parents are regular working class people who like to hike/don't shop at Bloomingdales etc., and are still baffled how they ended up with the sort of child who at ten begged for a subscription to W magazine... quizzicle)

Some of my preferred looks from the collection... which to be honest I did not love:

The majority of the pieces present a sort of ladylike-victorian-gothic look. I love the constant reinvention of the classic Chanel tweed suit and the sparkling black halters amongst the evening wear. There was also lots of feathery fringe, dark dark eye make-up, and what I consider HIDEOUS flat across platform sandals (those are hideous right? does anyone disagree?).

Marc Jacobs Collection

I love how a Couture vs. RTW collection from a single designer can appear at first glance so, so different (see previous post), but at closer inspection so clearly follow a similar trend and trajectory.

My favorite looks from the Marc Jacobs Collection SS '11 show at NY Fashion Week:

To be honest I hated (really) a lot of the peices I saw (those I did not care to present here, whoops!), but as a whole I greatly respect and admire the collection as a whole.

These styles are larger-than-life. They are statements. So bold! The color palate so vibrant! Awe-inspiring really, the collection is awesome. "Awe", here clearly, is the word I'm gravitating towards, c'est le mot juste.

Honestly I'm sure if I were physically present at this show it would have brought me to tears - yes, clothes can make me cry (fashion is an art form!), but to be fair I am the sentimental sort (...Marc Jacobs SS '11 leads to Stendhal Syndrome in local blogger?).

As to my previous statement on the similarity between this collection and Marc by Marc there is again a very retro vibe, but one that leans towards a later decade - very 1970's, very disco-age. Again there are the jumpsuits, a vibrant and pervasive color scheme, and mixed materials, satins, sheers and leather.

Right now my style may be more MXMJ, but someday, oh that someday, you'll see me in Marc Jacobs.

Leave it to Marc

If you follow my blog you may have gathered I have an everlasting love for Marc J., one still going strong after 8+ years.

The MXMJ ready-to-wear shows are always a highlight of my fashion week experience (one still via the internet at this point) - The Spring '11 collection was no exception.

The looks he presented in New York this past week came across as wearable (true to the RTW title, often not true of fashion show styles in general), and at once unique while maintaining a distinctly "Marc" aesthetic.

My Favorites:

The overall trend of the collection is clearly very retro - heavy on the fifties/sixties vibes - especially in the cut of the garments.

Notice:

high waisted a-line skirts
shirt-dresses
what I'll characterize as a retro, carefree, beach girl look (in swimwear, casual sneakers, sundresses)
stripes! everywhere!
a distinct color palate - dark oranges and yellows
the transition from romper to jumpsuit
mixed materials (sweaters, satin, jersey)

This set is a great example of the Mad Men-esque trend, distinguished by a more pronounced feminine style, shape, and silhouette, that is dominating fall collections. A few of the images show off another trend that has been gaining momentum, almost the neon red-coral lipstick; in this case a great way to modernize and refresh an old school style.

I don't buy too many magazines these days; as much as I love them they can get a bit pricey for my current financial situation (graduating from college is supposed to make it easier to find a job, isn't it?), and with everything so readily available online the purchase can be hard to justify. Still I love the tangible experience of consuming a magazine, and not having that experience so often makes those occasions that I do particularly satisfying. Remember how in last weeks Lingerie Lundi! I focused on practical linge ("bras for bras sake")? Yes, that was unusual... but I believe my latest linge discovery should quickly correct that petit détour.

Bordelle is a London based company specializing in couture "bodywear". The company was founded in 2007 by Alexander Popa who then teamed up with designer Javier Suarez to create the very distinctive line.

I am really into the bodycon bandage dresses, but I can't really imagine how they would feel on, or even how to get them on. Definitely an intriguing line.

Looking back at past Lingerie Lundi's I realize I have featured a plurality of London based brands - it's funny, I have never particularly associated the UK with especially innovative, high-fashion lingerie, but the trend really is quite significant.

Makin' a Statment

Tonight I stumbled across these aaaaaamazing statement necklaces online at Anthropology, and now need one desperately, terribly, immediately, ASAP-ery! Sadly I live in poverty (nice rhythm there, right? I was a poetry minor), so instead of obsessively (and dangerously) online shopping, I obsessively collected these images (less dangerous), cropped them, sized them, collaged them, and posted them, here, for your viewing pleasure:

These range from $32 to $228 (mostly on the lower end, under $70), and are available here.

I actually don't own anything like a bib necklace, which is obviously a problem that needs to be rectified right away. This is the sort of piece you can build an entire outfit around. One instantly dresses up and adds interest to a simple tee and jeans, draws visual focus up to your face, and balances out other components of an outfit, from a full skirt to a strapless dress.

Lingerie Lundi!

Usually I use Lingerie Lundi to showcase pretty, whimsicle, expressly sexy, hand made or high fashion pieces, focusing on fashion rather than the function. This week I am going to review my own favorite bras, ones who's sole purpose is not aesthetic - bras for bras sake.

At the beginning of the summer, after realizing that had been years since I had bought a real quality bra myself, and that all of my favorites were literally falling apart, I spent a little time at Victoria's Secret. Usually I buy lingerie because it is pretty, flirty, or $10 at H&M, but I have come to the conclusion that it is really worth it to spend a little more on a quality bra, from a store who's business is focused on that, which is comfortable, durable, and looks and feels good under clothes. I'm not generally a Vicky Sec's enthusiast, but I am really happy with what I found, and, at the store I shopped (Bay Street, Emeryville, for the local folk) I was met with some really great, helpful customer service in the fitting room.

Obviously every body is different and everyone has different needs of a bra, but these are the three that I bought, and have been loving and living in for the past few months:

lots of "Contour" for the un-contoured set such as myslef, comfortable and comes in a great shade of nude for the light skinned demo, optimal under a white top.
dream angels® Push-up Bra

cute, sporty, super light and great fit. I have it in a cranberry color which I really like.
Victoria's Secret Pink®, Push-up Bra with Lace

a good strapless bra is hard to find, and this is, without a doubt the BEST strapless bra I have ever worn or tried; excellent worn as a racer back as well.

You don't want to be THAT American at a fancy restaurant looking like doof."

In Cairo: "p.s. I saw a woman in the Cairo ariport wearing a faux chanel burka. I died and thought of you so we snapped a pic. Shameless!"

and the last piece of advice from the oh-so-fashionable backpacking babe? "Always leave room for a little shopping along the way."

This past Spring one of my best (and most fashionable) friends took an amazing multi-country trip with her boyfriend. They visited Australia, East Timor, Bali, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Spain, Morocco, Egypt and South Africa. Initially, upon hearing of the trip, I was consumed with jealousy... then I realized the situation could be mutually beneficial.

G is a fellow fashion lover, a New York City girl, and has contributed to this blog on many occasions be it through reader mail, our conversations on fashion and style, the many hours spent on gchat sharing links to pants we aren't sure we if we wanted, a dress one thinks will look great on the other, or insider sales and coupon codes, and mostly through all her support and encouragement of along the way.

While G was off travelling the world, she was alos e-mailing me pictures and travel/fashion advice all for the purpose of this four post feature:

"We were away for 3 months total with the first being spent working at the Ministry of Finance in Timor-Leste within the Directorate for Aid Effectiveness, and the rest was a real whirlwind (e.g. 5 to 10 days in each location). I inititially had a hard time reconciling feeling like myself (in a fashion sense), and not a 18 year old backpacker, with a packlist that was practical and condensed (I literally had one Kelty backpack), but found that neutrals, quality cottons and the right accessories were the right balance for such a long trip."

Last week's Lingerie Lundi! featured pictures of "boudoir" bedroom - in keeping with that theme I would like to share some beautiful examples of Boudoir Photography. A boudoir photoshoot often takes place before a wedding (thus many wedding photographers also shoot this style), but that is certainly not a prerequisite. Many women do these for their sweetie, or just for themselves. I think it sounds absolutely maaaarvelous!

Working on the Weekend

As I put work off all weekend I told myself, with determination, that today, Sunday, I would buckle down, be super-productive, transform into a quick-thinking, incredibly focused genius girl, and complete every task I've intended to all week.

My desk looks something like this one... but without the chandelier, and the dress is probably from H&M, and the champagne is Trader Joe's...

I have often wondered how those who work from home manage to get anything done. I can be so focused working out of a loud, busy coffee shop, but entirely unproductive working from my desk at home. Or, how at work I can whip out a seemingly boring administrative task (data-entry anyone?) with gusto, then ask for more, but at home I'll write one sentence before my mind wanders.

I think of a thousand things I need to do before I start working, excuses that often make some sense, but always take me away from the task at hand, maybe for an hour, maybe for a day.

Sitting at my desk my mind wanders... maybe I should shower now, I might as well be self-tanning while I'm sitting around the house, a snack might do me good, I should head out for a cup of coffee, I probably deserve to watch a little tv...

Another tendency I have, and have had since I was a kid actually, is to redecorate, rearrange and reorganize my room... I should organize my books, I need to de-clutter these shelves, how could I possibly be productive with my desk facing east??

I found this article on creating a productive home office had some good tips. But then again I'll start in on the remodeling, maybe take a trip to Ikea for a proper desk lamp, consult a book on Feng Shui...

I HAVE to organize my closet, and my dresser top and jewelry is a mess, a lovely view of my apartment will certainly do me good... obviously I need to do a little remodel.

In the midst of writing this post I got up to shower, use a hair mask, and apply self tanner, then went out for coffee... ohhh the power of suggestion. Somehow I managed to stop myself from rearranging my jewelry.

How do you who work from home manage to stay on task? Does anyone else use redecorating as an excuse not to work, or is that just really weird (it sounded kinda weird in my head as I typed it just now...)? I know most bloggers work from home, how do you do it?

So, a question for my fashion expert: I've been invited to a wedding this August of a college friend in Newport, RI. The wedding is black tie and I'm having a hard time reconciling black tie, summer, and beachside location in my head. Any brilliant ideas? The event starts around 5 pm and goes in to evening... Feel free to use for reader mail or just to help me out puhlease. Ugh. xx. G.

As wedding season is upon us (so I hear; I won't pretend to be a wedding expert... though I have been planning mine since I was five... shhhh), and the summer is only getting more, well, summer-y, I imagine lots of people may be finding themselves in situations as similar to one above. I think a lot of us dress more casually in general during the summer, and certainly at the beach, so I can definitely see how difficult it could be to reconcile, as my reader stated, the setting and season with the dress code indicated, and find something to wear. After a bit of reading a research, I can offer the following advice:

Despite it's formal designation, Black Tie does allow for considerable variation (unlike White Tie, which is extremely regulated), especially for women. Traditionally the definition may have demanded a floor-length evening gown, but these days’ dressy separates or short formal cocktail dresses are entirely appropriate as well. I would focus less on sticking to a particular style or length, and more on the combined glamour of every aspect of your look.

In the summer I feel much more comfortable in something that flows and is easy to move in; so I would stay away from boning and bandage dresses for this occasion. In rich, luxurious fabrics, with touch of sparkle and glamorous accessories, a dress that shape-wise might be identical to the comfortable, flowing, mini or maxi sundress you wear on the weekends is black tie.

A little shine and sparkle instantly dresses up an outfit. Look for these qualities in dress, or, use your accessories, shoes and jewelry for this purpose, especially if you feel your dress is a little plain.

I would definitely go with a pair of strappy, heeled sandals over of a full on pump, and make sure to bring a pashmina or shawl. It is always good to have one on hand to cover bare shoulders if the ceremony is in a church or temple, and certainly to shield yourself from the cool ocean breezes that will inevitably sneak up (I'm imagine a post-party stroll on the beach with my sweetie, a pair of sparkly strappy sandals dangling from my fingertips, cashmere shawl draped over my shoulders, beautiful gown trailing behind me in the sand, shining in the moonlight...).

Strapless sweetheart necklines are really prominent this season, as are one-shoulder dresses.

Budget is also a factor here. You need to decide whether-or-not you want to invest in something really special that you'll wear to other formal events over the years, in which case you should look for something timeless, and avoid trendier shapes and styles. If you doubt you’ll ever have reason to wear something so fancy again, and you don't have the disposable income to spend on something you'll wear only once, you may want to choose a cocktail dress that can easily be dressed up or down.

Wellllll, you know I love award shows... no, actually that was a lie, I never watch award shows, but I love the outfits they inspire, and consume those greedily after the fact... and, if you know me personally you may know that I love Nicki Minaj! As the weather warms everyone, including myself, is talking about slimmin' down and tonin' up, and I for one would prefer to look as cute as possible while doing so... what can I say, I'm more into clothes than exercise ok? This is certainly no fitness blog...

Here's a round-up of styles from workout wear providers:

lululemon $40-90

I've never shopped at lululemon myself, super spendy, but I've heard very postitive reviews from friends who have. High quality, and bonus they will tailor your purchase in store.

Athleta $50-60

Athleta is a fairly new company from the Gap conglomerate focused entirely on fitness apparel. I've yet to order from them, but like it's sister companies you can take advantage of free shipping/returns, which I always appreciate.

Lucy $40-90

Lucy is another higher-end line of fitness apparel. When I lived in Southern California I had a roomie who worked at one and a couple times I took advantage of her discount. Everything is super high quality, I have a pair of cropped yoga pants made of the nicest, softest material.

GapBody $15-$45

GapBody is where all my favorite workout/yoga/dance pants come from. I have the first two pictured here and wear them both all the time.

Target $20

Target has a lot of really inexpensive workout wear, my problem is I'm always buying this stuff there just because it seems like it's such a great deal, then realizing I don't acutally like it so much. In my experience be careful with the cotton options, I have a racer-back, built in bra tank that shrank up immediately into a crop top (have not worked-out enough to sport that look yet...), and a pair of yoga pants that have faded pretty unattractively.

Victoria's Secret $13-35

Vicky-Sec's has a lot of really cute items on their website, and apparently their fitness line, VSX, is branching out into stand-alone stores as well. Right now everything's on super-sale online, $12.99 yoga pants for example, I actually have a pair coming in the mail right now.

Good luck to everyone trying to get their workout on! I admit I feel a little more motivated when I feel cute and comfortable in what I'm wearing, so hopefully some of these ideas will inspire!

This weeks Lingerie Lundi comes via Freya, a British company specializing in lingerie for the fuller-busted lass:

The brand's mission is to provide cute and stylish, high-quality lingerie made specifically to perfectly fit the larger-cup sized woman.

I don't know much about the plight of the larger cup-sized girl, but rumor has it that it can be very hard to find cute bras that meet her specific needs. Perhaps this line is an answer? They seem very dedicated to fit, come in sizes B-J (J!), and stateside are carried at Nordstrom, Neimans, and various boutiques.

THE Pre-Weekend [Pool!] Party Post!

Because the weather is suddenly amazing (at least here, in my corner of the Bay Area), and the weekends are fast-filling with backyard BBQs and pool parties, annddd because Anthro is hosting some incredibly cute swimsuits... this weeks Pre-Party is switching it up a bit... Summa Styleeee! yeahhh

I think this watercolor pattern is so so beautiful. Alas I cannot wear strapless styles, super unflattering on my proportions... but if you can, you should! and it should be this one, beautiful and classy.

I love these twisty bandeau tops that are everywhere now. I think it's the tassles that set this suit apart.

Great print! I imagine the lines make it super flattering. I love the cut-out at the bust.

This one I could definitely wear, the beading is pretty special, click the image for the larger view.

Kinda weird! But I'm so into the print, I love maps.

A very chic high-waisted style. I love the retro look of the high-waisted bottom, but I am generally weary of them. I see a lot of potential for unnecessarily accentuated chub on the not-so-small-waisted/flat-bellied crowd, but the rouching on this one along with the color, definitely increase it's flatterability (yes, flatterability, came to me right now, awesome new word), accessibility, versatility, etc.

Looovvvve this print! the fold-over waist on the bottoms is nice too. I'll take it!

Pretty, classic, sexy in a way you wouldn't be embarrassed wearing in front of your grandma.

As many of you may know I have long been involved in a love affair with Kate Moss. I love her face and how she photographs, and I love her amazing and fresh sense of personal style.

This one sided romance began in the early 90's when I was in still elementary school, not yet five feet tall, dressed mostly in Limited Too, Old Navy, and Mervyn's brand clothing, and constantly pouring over any fashion magazine I could get my hands on (I begged my mother for a subscription to W... she said No). These were the years of the infamous and incredibly controversial Calvin Klein ad campaigns headed by Kate Moss. I had the cK Be shot of her with her arms crossed (you can see it on the sidebar to the left) torn out of a magazine, up on my wall for years.

I always considered those images from her years with Calvin Klein as sort of the jumping off point for Kate Moss 101, that is until this year when I saw the images in the editorial posted below - the ones that would lead to Kate's introduction to Calvin Klein, and the tremendously successful career that would follow.

The editorial appeared in British cult magazine "The FACE", in 1990, when Kate was fifteen years old. Styled by Melanie Ward.

Through her photographs and direction Day introduced the 'imperfect' model; awkward, coltish - a vast departure from the dominant trend in fashion photography - larger than life Cindy Crawford/Linda Evangelista/Naomi Campbell-type supermodels photographed glossy and saturated in exotic locations - redefining the genre and ushering in a new generation of photographers, stylists, and models.

The photographs were taken on Camber Sands in England, a traditional seaside resort, and were astonishing for their raw, verité feel; an antidote to the glossy Vogue supermodels... It’s difficult to over emphasize how influential this story was at the time - Liberty London Girl

The incredibly influential (and controversial) French art and creative director Fabien Baron saw the images and consequentially introduced Kate to Calvin Klein; launching their relationship and Kate's career.

Morning Dolls!

Anyway, this gorgeous weather we've been having here in the Bay Area has put me in a fantastic mood. I'm doing a lot of frolicking around the neighb, quite literally smelling the flowers.

I love flowers! I've gotten into the habit of buying them for myself/my apartment every week or so, and it is totally worth it. It really makes me happy just to see them there in my apartment (I got some gorgeous, super tall, green and white beauties yesterday at the farmers market, and right now I'm pretty much just gazin at them. So pretty!), and I love that I can smell them as soon as I walk in the door.

I've always been somewhat fascinated by stylish couples. Couples wherein the lovebirds are stylish respectively and as a unit - probably because I've never really been a part of one.

Actually I don't know if I'd want to be part of one, or if I'd like it. In my personal romantic history I've always been the one into fashion and clothes, while my sweetie either has no interest in the matter, or his taste varies enormously from mine.

Truthfully, since my middle school days I've been helplessly drawn to the boy wearing oversized jeans, Jordans, gold chains... you know ghettofab, thuggish-ruggish, generally in the music industry in some capacity. It's pretty funny, especially because my style has been described as Alice in Wonderland/Strawberry Shortcake.

Anyway, I usually end up dressing these boys in Banana Republic and Lucky Jeans, also funny because that's really not my style either... but oh they look so cute!

I'm very sorry if the designer is reading this, but considering we are all style bloggers passing them around, at least at this point, shouldn't they be a little more stylish? Holla if ya hear me (so I don't just feel like a jerk)! I challenge anyone reading this to do a little re-design. End this vicious cycle of nerdy award icons!

Anyway, my criticisms of icon-design aside I am so honored to be recognized so favorably by a fellow fashion blogger! Sometimes in this blog-eat-blog world (I am hilarious, I know), it's hard to know if anyone actually reads what you work so hard on, so once again I'll say, such recognition really does feel amazing.

Wednesday's search for the perfect so-called Blogger Oscar gown took me down a quite lovely lane of memories as I stumbled upon the most gorgeous Oscar gowns of the last decade.

So many of us may not be attending a black tie award show this weekend... Someday we may, and a little inspiration, a little Pre-Party Planning, never hurts.

So babies, get excited. Over the next few days I'll be showcasing some of my personal favorite Oscar ensembles over the past 10 years, starting with this oh-so-controversial (and oh-so-unforgettable) frock donned by Ms. Cameron Diaz in 2002:

Cameron Diaz in Emanuel Ungaro, 2002:

This dress landed Cameron on almost every worst-dressed list at the time and even today. They've criticized her "bed head", and "unfortunate accessories". The dress has been described as "an awkwardly belted bathrobe", and "Betsy Johnson-like"... probably a criticism if you're Emanuel Ungaro. The notorious Mr. Blackwell famously declared: "It looks like she was dressed by a color-blind circus clown".

Still, I love it. I loved it then and I love it now. I love the cut and the color. The pop of turquoise at the wrist, and yes, even her "bed head", shiny, beach-y waves. I also love that it seems to fit the actresses beach-babe, bohemian persona so perfectly. It takes some guts to walk an ensemble like this down the red carpet, and she totally owned it.

Pour L'Amour's 1st Award!

Yesterday I learned that Simply Luxurious awarded me and my little baby blog 2 blogger awards! I almost shed a tear I was so honored. It isn't easy to establish yourself in the ever-expanding fashion blog world, and any recognition feels really amazing.

With the awards came this question: If you were to attend the Blogger Academy Awards, what would you wear?

This gave me a wonderful excuse to peruse the most glamorous Oscar-worthy gowns, and come across this one, which absolutely took my breath away:

Penny Cruz at the 2009 Oscars in a 60-year-old vintage Balmian butter-white gown. Some critics called this dress too bridal for an awards show, but I think it is completely magical. The exquisite detail, the beading, the lace... Magical!

For jewels, I don't know what she's wearing, but I'd wear those. She's accessorized perfectly.

Lingerie Lundi! Etsy Edition

I was so excited by last weeks Lingerie Lundi finds via Etsy, I decided to look a bit harder, and dedicate a post to some of the most gorgeous, decadent, handmade, vintage-inspired pieces on the site.
Some of these items are on the expensive side (and some aren't), but the cost is only a reflection of the quality materials, and the fact that those pieces are custom-made to order to your exact measurements, which is pretty awesome.

Hankerchief linen bralette and boxer with cotton lace trim, from sandmaidensleepwear. These are so pretty. I love the fresh, clean, white linen look. I find these so pretty and subtly-sexy. There were so many items I loved in this shop it was really hard to pick just one.

Vintage organdy and silk fabric strapless babydoll and matching short from Naomilingerie. So pretty and spring/summery.

Silk tap pants/French knickers from ladyjanelingerie. These are based on a 1930's pattern. I love the buttons!

Eyelet babydoll and bloomers set from Intima. I love this sort of look. So pretty and feminine.

Georgette and silk cropped camisole and knickers from Hopeless. I absolutely love the cut on this camisole. This shop is full of equally cute vintage-inspired, made-to-order pieces. Again, really hard to choose!

Icing on the Cake bra and undies from Toadlillie. I featured peices from this shop on last weeks edition. I absolutely love everything there. Ruffles, bows, and such silky, soft, sumptuous materials.

Check out the DNA (Designers and Artists) Storefront event in Hayes Valley.

Every weekend this month at their retail space/gallery, (644 Laguna Street, San Francisco) DNA will host emerging as well as established designers and artists from SF, LA, and NYC, selling and showcasing their wares.

This Saturday, at the "All Vintage Everything" event from 12-6pm, an amazing up-and-coming designer, Megan Quirolo (who I am privileged enough to know personally, but I promise this review is not biased!), will have a booth featuring her handmade, vintage-inspired clothing line May&June. I highly recommend checking it out!
I'm fairly obsessed with her tunics. You can get an idea of what you'll find via her etsy store, and the DNA blog.

THE Pre-Weekend Party Post! (Oh the Difference a Coast Makes)

Last week's Pre-Weekend featured pictures from a Ray-Ban-sponsored concert, headlined by Iggy Pop in Brooklyn, NY. This week's showcases those from a Missoni-sponsored fete, celebrating the launch of Style.com editor Derek Blasberg's new book Classy, hosted by Margherita Missoni, Nicole Richie, and Kate Bosworth, in Los Angeles, CA.

While it is not surprising a book launch and a rock concert would exhibit different styles, I still think the comparison aptly showcases the vastly different aesthetic between the LA and NY fashion scene. Even with many of the same guests in attendance (hostess Kate Bosworth and Charlotte Ronson for example) the looks at each party, which were, respectively, really very similar, truly could not be more different.

Lonely Hearts is a New Zealand-based brand established in 2003. It's lingerie line, LONELY by Lonely Hearts was conceived in 2009. The peices bring to mind adjectives like clever, quirky, whimsical, and ethereal; they are sexy without being raunchy, and feminine without being super girly.

Mother's Day DIY

Since these days I don't really have the means to buy something really special, I like to make gifts for the people I love. I think people really appreciate the effort that goes into something you've made yourself, I know I really do. Recently I've been on a flowers kick; I love how they cheer up my apartment, and I love buying them for myself. I imagine flowers are the most common Mother's Day gift, but I wanted to give my mom something a little more personal and permanent than just a bouquet; so I stepped in up a notch with this DIY project.

What you need:
1. A vase (or jar, glass, bottle... anything that will hold flowers). I got tons of them in all shapes and sizes from a thrift store for around 75 cents each (Thrift Town in El Sobrante if you're local). The vase doesn't need to be amazing as is (i.e. don't use your Tiffany's crystal), the whole point is that you are going to beautiful it yourself.
2. Glass marbles with one flat side, the type usually used inside a vase to hold the flowers in place. You can get these in the floral department of any craft store (I went to Micheal's in Emeryville).
3. A glue gun (also available at craft stores).

All of the inexpensive vase-type glassware I got on the cheap (and flowers! pretty!):

Glue gun and marbles (don't rest the glue gun directly on any surface you care about, it will drip and that glue dries fast and hard... hence my folder):

These marbles come in all colors, I chose clear and a pretty rose-quartz color)

Squeeze a dot of glue onto the vase and press one of the marbles against it. Keep doing this around the base, and then in rows up the vase (note: starting at the base instead of the top isn't necessary, but it worked well here). You can cover the whole vase as I am here, or in any pattern you like:

The finished product! much prettier that it started out I think:

I made two more. The small one is really just a water glass. I used the pale rose colored marbles at the top and the clear at the bottom making sort of a gradient effect. The larger one is really a big jar, like for flour or something. I just did a few rows of the pink marbles around the rim:

Voila! my Mother's Day gift. I think she will really like the trio (and hope she isn't reading this post quite yet)...

It may (May, haha!) not technically be Summer quite yet , but at least around my parts the weather is ammaaaazing, and I am loving the sense of renewed energy I'm feeling in myself and everyone around me. I am also loving being able to wear skirts and dresses at night without tights (!), and lightweight white skirts and dresses and strappy sandals in natural tones. I can't wait for backyard BBQs and trips to the beach.

I am admittedly a sucker for a shirt dress, I have many... but none like this! They are so figure flattering and easy to wear. Moschino! SS '10 RTW or Resort?

I've always been a fan of Moschino, and the very original, colorful, playful, and often eccentric looks the brand is known for.

Everything I've read about it's founder, Franco Moschino, is also very inspiring. He was artistic and creative and produced very high-quality garments, while also publicly expressing criticism of the fashion industry (I vaguely remember early advertising campaigns that boasted slogans such as: "Warning: fashion shows can be dangerous to your health" and "Good taste doesn't exist").

Moschino launched the line in 1983 and never abandoned his fierce commitment to the environment and animal and human rights.

Moschino died in 1994 at age 43, and Rosella Jardini

took over as creative director, continuing to produce irreverent, playful, wearable collections in line with it's founders legacy.

I've always been interested in the very different looks that can come out of one fashion house. Marc Jacobs Collection versus Marc by Marc Jacobs is one example of two very different lines by one designer. While I was going various fashion week collections, I was struck by the juxtaposition between Moschino RTW and Moschino Resort. I really like them both. Do you have a preference?

Installment II: Underwear-as-Outerwear

Wearable at Work?

Yes! sometimes. and obviously it depends on where you work and how conservative or fashion-forward the environment is. My reader, of the reader mail that inspired this post (See Installment I), works for BCBG Max Azria, obviously a fashionable environment where I think this look would be more acceptable. If you are a librarian, probably not.

In my opinion, balance is key. One "underwear" item per outfit and the rest of it should lean toward the conservative side. It is also helpful if you are able to adjust your outfit to cover-up/conservatize (new word) if need be. Layering is the easiest option, as you can see below I chose a lot of cardigans and blazers that can allow you to show as much or as little as you like.

How I styled/tried it:

Huh? basically I just thought my confused-at-photobooth face was too hilarious not to include. also, excuse the poor quality photos, I was alone at home and that's all I really had for self-portrait-ing.

Cosabella cami, Splendid tee, Banana Republic skirt, Jessica Simpson shoes.

Layers! I will always consider this the Clueless look. remember how that movie had us all layering our tee-shirt with tanks for a minute? so here is a lacey, low-cut, lingerie-ish camisole, layered over a thin crew-neck tee, creating, in my opinion a very pretty, sweet look; especially worn with a high waist-ed pencil skirt, I think this outfit is pretty work-appropriate.

Haute Hippie blazer, Elie Tahari pants, Only Hearts bodysuit, asos cropped blazer, asos corset, DVF pants.

Pair a sheer bodysuit or corset style top with a sharp blazer and tailored pants. also, keep it sweet! pastels or feminine florals like this corset dial down the boudoir element of these pieces.

Asos corset, Asos wide-leg pants , Oasis crop blazer, Bebaroque bodysuit, Topshop tank.

A sharp suit balances out the lingerie-factor of these tops, and I love the nude and blush tones. I also looovvve that bodysuit.

American Apparel jersey leotard, Splendid white tee, asos lace top, DSQUARED2 dress, Freddy black bodysuit, Derek Lam dress.

A strapless dress, especially one with an underwire style top like these would generally never be appropriate for work. but layered over a sweet short or three-quarter length sleeved tee, really dials down the sexy factor, and in my opinion looks super cute. a bodysuit is a good option here. this is another example of how to balance out an outfit. just make sure the dress isn't too cocktail-y or bodycon.

H&M pink label top, F21 skirt, Target peep-toe flats (so, instead of being embarrassed lets just use this to illustrate how a girl can dream of everything at shopbop, but manage to shop it on a budget).

Me trying out black lace. I think with lace usually white or lighter colors keep things more appropriate, black or (eek!) red is a lot more bedroom style. with black I say the sleeves should be short or three-quarter, never full length, and it should be on the looser side. I'm wearing mine with just a light pink bra underneath, but I think it works with a skirt worn high, above the waist actually. I paired my outfit with flats to tone it down further.

Pair a sheer flowy top with a high waisted skirt. black and lacey is balanced beautifully with a demure light pick knee-length skirt.

Alice+Olivia tee, Thakoon corset, F21 skirt , Rag & Bone cardigan, F21 short-sleeve cardigan, F21 draped cardigan.

Like the strapless dress, I love a corset top over an appropriately conservative top. bottoms are best high-waisted and knee-length or just above, and again, layering is the easiest option. a long cardigan (there are lots of really pretty lightweight options in blush and grey tones in stores now. I bought a couple at Zara about a month ago that I'm practically living in, see below), button or belt it at the waist letting as much or little of your "underwear" style top (depending on how revealing or sexy it is) show through. I've also been seeing a lot of these scarf-like cardigan/vest options that I really like.

Here I'm layering two underwear-style pieces, the lace bodysuit, and camisole (slip, actually, cut into a cami), to make one that is appropriate to wear in public. I'm layering it with a long belted cardigan that allows me to cover up more or less as needed. keeping everything in these pale blush tones makes it pretty and sweet as opposed to overtly sexy.

A low back is a nice way to let a little lace peek through, and a cardigan allows you to button/unbutton to the degree that you feel comfortable with. I think these camis are perfect for this look. they're sexy but still very sweet, and, importantly they are obviously not just a regular bra - it is important with "under/outer" that it's clear your choices aren't accidental.

I'm a little less sure if I'd wear this out during the day or at work, basically I am wearing two bras and a cardigan. I do think the layering of the bras, one very structured, almost corset looking, but actually not very low cut or cleavage-y (at least not on me, haha) under the lace bralette, which could pass for a cami from this viewpoint, sort of makes it work. again, it helps that everything is in lighter, similar tones, and this outfit displays the versatility of a cardigan.

In my opinion, high waisted, tailored pants are important. they reel in the sexy, hips, hourglass effect of a corset-type top. and like a sharp blazer or suit jacket, vests like this one are a great option.

to recap: balance is key. layers. it helps to have the option to cover-up. keep it sweet. lighter colors, blush tones. cardigans. sharp, tailored trousers and jackets. high waist-ed skirts and pants. one "under" per outfit.

Earlier tonight, over 24-hour diner pancakes, I expressed to a web-savvy friend how frustrated I was with myself for not getting blog posts out as promised. I get so involved in a subject that the material keeps growing and what should have taken me an evening turns into days.

He advised me to put out what I had, when I had it (...not to put out, there was no putting out, despite the 24-hr nature of the dining); to keep it constant, to keep it moving, and to keep it short. A blog post doesn't need to be epic, it needs to be relevant. I'm not authoring a novel, I'm writing a blog. And my subject isn't historical; it's the present and it's dynamic.

That's the nature of fashion, it doesn't just stop once the shows are over. Trends evolve over the course of a season, new ideas are realized everyday, and everyday that I work on a post I have new ideas, and I find more and more I need to include. But really, when I come to a point where I am overwhelmed with material, I need to just start putting it out, and think of each post as a progression, instead of a main event.

Anyway, I've been talking about this "underwear as outerwear" post for days, and it's about time I got on with it - starting from the beginning:
